Home style

I hope you enjoyed the pictures of the kitchen renovation at our first house! Now let’s talk about our current house. We have so many ideas for this house. Like I mentioned in my first post, we built the house. However, it was not custom, and our budget prevented us from doing everything we wanted. While we moved into our house 4 years ago, we haven’t done much, yet! There are several reasons for that:

  • other expenses
  • wanting a clear direction for the house before starting projects
  • getting the basics done (painting, installing lights, hardware, window coverings, etc.)
  • Smaller projects revolve around larger projects. For example, built-ins or molding upgrades don’t make sense until after floors are replaced. If you are asking yourself why new floors would be needed in a 4 year old house, the floors were not installed well, are low-grade materials, we have an aging dog, and we want wood floors but could not afford them when we built.
  • I have a hard time “decorating” if I feel there are large projects or furniture necessities in a room. I’m all or nothing in a lot of rooms. If it can’t be exactly the way I want it, I tend not to do anything at all.
  • Its hard to put holes in brand new walls. It feels like such a commitment, especially since we plan to live here for a long time. Luckily, we discovered 3M, which has helped me get a few things on the walls.
  • Its hard to decide where to put art/mirrors/etc that we already own and still like, but were bought for another house.

I am actually glad we have waited to do a lot of decorating. It has really given us time to figure out what works for us in this house and what doesn’t. For example, when we first moved in, I had lots of ideas on how to decorate our home office. It turns out, we don’t really need a home office. If we decide we need one in the future, there are other places we could put it. What we really could use is a mudroom. So one of our upcoming projects is turning our office, which conveniently shares a wall with the garage, into a mudroom. Our slow-pace-decorating has also given us time to try to figure out what kind of style we are going for in this house. I am drawn to lots of different decorating styles. So sometimes it’s really hard for me to decide which direction to go.

To try to really narrow down our look, I started a pinterest board called “home style,” and I am very selective about what I pin there. I think I have about 25 pins. Here are a few of them and what I like about them.

What I like from above: lucite, classic wood floors, large modern mirror, black, blingy light fixture

Houzz

What I like from above: slate, black and white, sleek fireplace, moldings that don’t read too traditional or too craftsman (even though I like craftsman)

My Domain

What I like from above: traditional staircase that has been modernized (something I want to do at our house), traditional bones with modern details in furnishings/rugs/lights, gray, lacquer, geometric patterns , blue and orange, black and white

Remodelaholic

What I like from above: black and white, glass front cabinets with circle detail, clean line white cabinets, curved vent hood, old style faucet

Tuvaluhome

What I like from above: mirrored furniture with circle detail, gray, sophisticated but comfortable, clean line couches, kind of minimalist

Homebunch

What I like from above: gray, vintage looking tile, stainless steal, OBSESSED with this vanity (and can’t find anything like it anywhere). I want this to be my style. It looks like a bathroom at a fancy steakhouse. And I could live like that.

What I like from above: slate, faucet style, modern mixed with traditional. This is actually the first picture I pinned on my “home style” board…the reason I thought I should create the board. Even though there are parts I don’t love, it does a good job of summarizing my style.

So to summarize, I think my style is probably transitional (if I had to pick one word). I like modern mixed with traditional, with a little bling. I like timeless, if that’s possible. I am always drawn to lucite, glass, metal, lacquer, slate, and black and white. I hope that we can just do what we like and still have a house that looks cohesive. I think we can play around with other styles in bedrooms and in our basement. We would like the basement to be a little more industrial. I know my daughters room leans a little more shabby chic, and my sons room will lean more mid-century modern. After the purchase of a dresser for us, I’m envisioning something restoration hardware style in our bedroom. We recently visited a show home with that style throughout (I’ll take you through it in an upcoming post). By the way, what is that style? Its moody, masculine. Is there a name for that?? I’ll have to show you pictures so you know what I mean! Do you like multiple decor styles like me?
