One Room Challenge – week one

Our tile for the mudroom arrived yesterday, and we have the room pretty well cleared out! As I was reading some of my favorite blogs today, I realized that a few of them were participating in the One Room Challenge (ORC) put on by Calling it Home. Some of them are invited participants and others are guest participants, which anybody can do. I figured since this is lining up so nicely with a project we were already planning, I might as well link up with them as a guest participant!

ORC

So for those friends and family who have been following along since I started blogging in February, this post will contain some information that you already read about in the mudroom plans post. If you are new to my site because of ORC, welcome! I am a brand new blogger (still working on some kinks and on improving photography) whose focus is home-improvement and everything that goes along with that. You can read a little more about us in my first post and in the “In Our Corner” tab. If you would like to get a sense of our style to figure out if you want to follow along, check out our first house, our biggest renovation to date, our style, and some rooms we will be working on in the near future.

Now let me show you the space we will be working on for this challenge! The basic plan is to take our current “office” and turn it into a mudroom. We don’t need an office. We both work outside the home, and I imagine our kids setting up camp in the dining room for future homework like I always did. We don’t currently use the room except to keep files, old school books, and random stuff that has ended up in there. We always have the doors shut.

Here is the floor plan so you can see how this will work:

You can see that the den shares a wall with the garage. We will be adding a door from the garage to the new mudroom. | Brockton floor plan from M/I Homes Indianapolis (we added on a sunroom).

Here’s why we want a mudroom:

This is what you would see on a good day (I think I had just cleaned the first floor about 90% of the way because people were coming over) entering our house from the front door. We deposit bags and purses by the wine cabinet and coats on the chair in the dining room.

Here are current pictures of the room:

The new door to the garage will be on the right wall. Keep in mind that we never tried to style this room. This is not a representation of our style or of a finished room 🙂

New floor plan:

Old school planning. Just a little pen and graph paper 🙂 Remember, we are novice bloggers (but we do have some experience with renovating).

Here are our wishes for the mudroom:

  1. A cubby for each family member
  2. Doors on the cubbies to hide the mess
  3. Open shoe storage under the cubbies (something easy to clean)
  4. Storage above the cubbies for seasonal items (sunglasses, hats and gloves, etc.)
  5. Hooks on the wall for guests
  6. A desk area to set/sort mail.
  7. File cabinets to file mail (already have these in there)
  8. A bulletin board to hang invitations, event fliers, etc.
  9. Slate floors
  10.  As much storage as possible

These cubbies are perfect if you ask me. They are large with open shoe storage and space above for seasonal items. | Decor Pad

We are so excited for this project. I don’t love the messy construction, but I am excited for the added function to our home! We hope to not only have function in here, but also some personality. I would love to be able to get this done in 6 weeks, but I want to make sure that we don’t rush it, either. I don’t want to have regrets just so we can get it done. Stay tuned!
