ORC Week 3 – Brick Brick Brick

It’s going to be a quick update for week 3 of the One Room Challenge. The kids are home on fall break and we have a visitor from San Diego (not staying with us of course)! All week was dedicated to bricking the great room side of the fireplace. It’s done! This was a really tedious job for Parker and took a lot longer than you would think. A LOT of bricks had to be cut, and every brick had to be individually backed with thin-set. As he got higher on the wall, he had to climb the ladder to place each brick. He said he watched a video where 2 people did the job and it was MUCH quicker (obviously). If we didn’t have an infant, I could help, but it just doesn’t work for me to be involved right now. I’m usually making dinner, feeding the baby, and doing bath and bed time while he works. Plus, I just don’t think I have the touch with the physical stuff. I would place the bricks crooked or not put the thin-set on right.

So here is where we are at

Now, you have to use your imagination. There is still a lot of wood to add, and remember it will be all white. But already, I think it makes a huge difference!! There’s finally something to look at in this room rather than the tan walls. I feel like it brings the ceiling down a bit, and it might make the room feel a little smaller, but not really in a bad way. I think its going to be really good!!

We also heard today that our new floors will be here in one week. So here’s our timeline:

This weekend: mortar the brick

This coming week: finish all of the wood detail on the fireplace

The next week: lay the bathroom tile and have the fireplace painted

Then lay the floors!!!!

Any advice on white paint? Our mudroom is SW Alabaster and I love it, but I am not sure that’s what we want throughout the house on all of the trim since it’s more of an off white and does stand out quite a bit up against our window muttons. Will that bother me? I don’t know. Maybe. Let me know if you have a white that you really love on all of your trim. Also, if you are local, let me know if you have a good painter. I’ve contacted 3, and nobody will get back to me!!

  1. Hello Jalene! Loving the design you went with. I almost used those brick tiles on our fireplace too. They are beautiful. Can’t wait to see it with the wood added and painted. 🙂
