Trim and moldings

Sorry to subscribers who got a REALLY rough draft of this Sunday night. I accidentally hit publish!

Replacing the floors in the mudroom means that we had to remove the baseboards. Parker was able to remove them without damaging them, but we have decided to replace them with something we like better. Its not that I hate the current baseboards, they are just nothing special. We would prefer something taller and more custom looking. Like I said before, Parker grew up in an old house with lots of character. Our house lacks said character. So, one of our goals is to try to add as much of that as we can to our house. What do you think gives a house “character”? What does “character” even mean? I guess I think it means originality, customization, and high quality materials. I think we can work on two of those. I don’t think we will end up with hard wood moldings throughout or stained glass windows! It really is true that things aren’t made like they use to be, and to get the same quality of materials in a new house would cost a fortune!

In addition to replacing the baseboards, we will also be adding moldings to the mudroom walls. There are a few other rooms where we would like to do this, as well. Our living room has a huge two story wall with only one window on it, so this would be a place where adding moldings could make the room much less cave-like. We’ve also thought about adding moldings in the master bedroom. The moldings we do in the mudroom will be different than the other rooms.

I think baseboards/crown/trim/moldings can kind of set the tone for the house. I would like something that’s not too traditional since that isn’t how we are decorating the rest of the house. While I think I can do a different wall treatment in the mudroom than the other rooms, the baseboards need to be consistent. (However, replacing baseboards upstairs would be a last priority). I’ve been thinking about baseboards/crown/moldings for a long time, so I know what direction I want to go for the entire house. Luckily, I don’t feel pressure to make a rash decision. However, we are waiting for a quote on baseboards to figure out if we can afford what I like 🙂 We need to make sure that we can afford to eventually do the baseboards throughout at least the first floor and master bedroom (which is on its own level of the house). Here is what I love:

I would like to do panels (left) but in the style like the cabinet doors on the right. This would be an idea for the great room and/or our bedroom.

Like I said, we found one of the baseboard options at Carter Lee. We are waiting on a quote (or we will stop in if we get off work in time) to see if what we want is possible. If not, we have a few other diy ideas that could hopefully be done within our budget.

Do you like the baseboards? What do you think about different moldings in different rooms? I would like the house to be cohesive, but I do think doing something a little different in the mudroom can work. It will still have the same baseboards/crown as the rest of the house.

Stop back by on Thursday to see where we are at with the mudroom!

  1. Parker could pretty much say anything building related and I would believe him. But I love that you checked it out 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing, this blog is awesome!

    1. I’ll tell him you said that 🙂 You got the “rough draft” of my post. I accidentally hit publish when I wasn’t even close to done. I actually ended up leaving the part about old vs new wood out of the post I am sharing on the site. I might bring it back later, though.

  2. Baseboards are a huge upgrade I think! I notice nice baseboards right away…I like the taller ones. Also I’m obsessed with the MA Allen interiors picture…that design is so unique! Can’t wait to see it when it’s done! Have you heard back yet on if you can afford the one you’re getting a quote on?

    1. I also love taller baseboards. And I found out last night that 9 ft ceilings can handle a taller baseboard than I was planning! That MA Allen picture is “fabulous” to use my daughter’s favorite word. We did hear back that we CAN afford the baseboards!! Woohoo! They were actually MUCH cheaper than I was anticipating. (I got the quote on a 5.5in baseboard, but now we are thinking 7.25in….so hopefully that will still be in the budget, but I don’t think it will be THAT much more).
